I am pleased to commend to you the work of Charles Pettee and the
FolkPsalms project. Over the past two years, Charles has brought
his considerable musical abilities and experience in American folk/bluegrass
to bear in a still-unfolding phenomenon of creative energy: a group
of artists merging the ageless power of Hebrew poetry and song with
an infusion of Charles' own trademark interpretive skills, introducing
a whole new generation of hearers to truths first chanted and danced
around middle-Eastern campfires three millenia ago. Pettee's work
enjoys a dual punch: authentic interpretation of the Biblical lyric
and a musical style captivating and engaging in its performance.
I have enjoyed FolkPsalm on many occasions, in venues ranging from
formal Sunday morning worship to outdoor festivals to evensong concert
setting at Duke Chapel. Their appeal is cross-genreational and no
respecter of false religious boundaries, drawing both the orthodox
and the disinterested into the power of their performance. Charles
Pettee & FolkPsalm represent the finest of North Carolin'a eclectic
musical possibilities... They have earned my respect and admiration.
